CIOFFI, Staff Writer/Reporter Guilderland take care of St. Joe's to advance DELMAR – The first game of the Guilderland Holiday Hockey Tournament saw the host school the Guilderland Skating Dutchmen (7-3) face off against the Crusaders of St. Joseph’s (2-2). Guilderland’s Joe Campanelli opened up the scoring in the first period on a pass from fellow Senior Marcus Montgomery. The first period continued to be all Dutchmen as senior Drew Rosenberry tallied the final goal of the period. The game’s Most Valuable Player was led on a beautiful breakaway and went top shelf on Crusader goalie Chris Marinaro. Rosenberry’s unassisted short handed goal was one of two on the night for Guilderland, and helped the Dutchmen to extend their lead to 4-0 going into the second period. In the second period the Crusaders came out flying led by Junior Alex Hansen’s two goals less than a minute apart and it looked as if the Crusader’s were beginning to come to life. With the Dutchmen’s Drew Luther off for a slashing penalty, St. Joe’s had an opportunity to move to within one goal of the Dutchmen. That power play was spoiled when Guilderland’s Taylor Bourque broke up a Crusader pass and took it the length of the ice beating goalie Kristen Eulian and taking a commanding 5-2 lead going into the third period. The third period consisted of solid end to end action and a handful of penalties. The Dutchmen’s final goal came off the stick of Marcus Montgomery his fifth of the season, on a rebound that bounced off Eulian and onto his stick. The feisty Crusader’s managed to get one back when Brandon Lane poked in a goal after a flurry in front of the net. This smaller St. Joe’s team had a hard time getting around the much bigger Guilderland team. The final score of the game was 6-3, with the win the Dutchmen improve to 7-3 and move into Saturday afternoon’s championship game against Mamaroneck. While the Crusaders will face the Bethlehem Eagles in the consolation game.
Mamaroneck stays undefeated DELMAR– The Mamaroneck Tigers hockey team improved to 6-0 on Friday after beating the Bethlehem Eagles in the first round of the Guilderland Holiday Hockey Tournament. The undefeated Tigers looked like they may have been heading for their first loss against a 1-9 Bethlehem team. As Bethlehem surprised everyone in the building by coming out and opening up a 2-0 lead against the Tigers. But the Tigers ended the Eagles fun early on when they broke the 2-0 lead on a goal by Joe Genesi. The Eagles then responded with two more goals when the tandem of Erik Russo and Andrew Kelleher connected for a pair of goals giving their team a 4-1 lead. That would be the last time the Eagles played with the lead as the Tigers poured on five unanswered goals. These goals were led by the play of the quick and feisty Junior winger Tom Capalbo, who was also named game MVP for the Tigers. In the second period, the Tigers began where they left off when Tony Corsetti got into the act scoring a short handed goal 38 seconds into the period. With the Tigers Genesi off for a slash the Eagles got one back when Kelleher knocked in a rebound off a shot by Dave Farber which made the score 7-5 in favor of the Tigers. Bethlehem goalie Tim Crowely continued having problems with rebounds and odd man rushes. As Mamaroneck then scored five more unanswered goals some just seconds apart. These goals came mainly on odd man rushes and helped Corsetti earn a hat trick. Tigers’ Corsetti and Joe Van Valen went in on a 2 on 0 break and tic tac toed passes with each other in front of a defenseless Crowely until Corsetti poked it home giving their team a 10-5 lead. The Tigers got their 12th goal and final goal of the second period when Mike O’Byrne rifled a shot past Crowely on a pass from Peter Delvito. In the final period the Tigers offensive attack began to wind down. Bethlehem’s standout center Kelleher scored the final goal for the Eagles shorthanded early on in the third period off a takeaway in the neutral zone. The Tigers managed to put four more goals by Crowely, one shorthanded, before the final whistle blew. The Tigers offensive onslaught was to be much expected and it helped them to a 16-6 rout of a young and hard working Bethlehem team. The win moves Mamaroneck into the championship game of the Guilderland Holiday Tournament against the Skating Dutchmen of Guilderland on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles on the losing end of another game will play the Crusaders of St. Joseph’s in the consolation game also on Saturday.
