CIOFFI, Staff Writer/Reporter Guilderland battles hard for win against Shaker-Colonie ALBANY– The Guilderland Skating Dutchmen continued on their hot streak by holding off a very tough Shaker Colonie team. The win brings the Dutchmen’s unbeaten streak to nine games and improves their record to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in league play. The Dutchmen could not have won this one without the stellar play of Sophomore goalie Adam Gray. Gray refused to let a shot reach the back of the net as he went on to earn the shutout against a relentless S-C team. The first period brought a couple of man advantages to both teams. Guilderland saw their first power play early on in the first period but could not get one by the solid S-C netminder Eric Wolanin. But, on their second power play of the period the Dutchmen were able to set up a play and open up the scoring late in the first period. As a flurry was developing in front of the net, Captain Drew Luther put a shot in on Wolanin and the rebound came out to Tim Montgomery who wristed a shot past the out of position goal keeper. Montgomery’s goal put the Dutchmen up 1-0 going into the second period. The second period began with some sloppy play on both ends of the ice. Although, both teams had some quality shots and good scoring chances, neither team was able to get one by the goalies. As the period went on Guilderland was slowly getting it together and creating scoring chances in front of the S-C netminder. The Jets had many opportunities to get a goal by peppering Gray with shots but they were unable to find the back of the net. The scored remained 1-0, Guilderland going into the final period. The Jets came out with a lot of intensity, looking like a team on a mission as the third period began. As they were given the man advantage early on in the third, but failed to set up anything and had a hard time getting bodies in front of the Dutchmen goalie. The Skating Dutchmen were sure to take advantage on their power play, with S-C’s Aaron Kennedy off for boarding. After pressuring Wolanin with shots the Dutchmen were finally able to sneak one by him. The goal came off of a rebound in front of the net, with the goalie scrambling in the crease Marcus Montgomery was able to slide a shot past Wolanin’s blocker. Montgomery’s goal with about 6 minutes remaining in the final period gave his team a 2-0 lead, and sealed the deal for the Skating Dutchmen. The Skating Dutchmen will be looking to continue their winning streak as they battle La Salle on Friday at their home rink. The Jets drop to 3-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in league play. Their next game is at Auburn on Friday. Guilderland take care of St. Joe's to advance (CDHSHL.org is currently looking for volunteer freelance Sports Writers, Reporters, and/or Photographers to cover Section II Ice Hockey.
